Uganda Safaris

Uganda lies on the equator and boasts of a spectacular array of landscapes – from snow-capped mountains and savannah to lush swampland and impenetrable forests. Its remote natural National Parks teeming with wildlife and a variety of birdlife.

Both Uganda and neighbouring Rwanda share the unique responsibility of the conservation of the critically endangered mountain gorillas and chimpanzees through entry fees collected from visiting guests.

 

Day 1: Kampala

On arrival at Kampala airport, you’ll be met by your guide and after airport formalities drive for about 1 hour to your city hotel. Along the way you will catch a glimpse of Lake Victoria on your right as you negotiate the streets of Kampala.

Day 2: Kibale Forest

Morning departure after breakfast to the incredibly scenic Kibale Forest via tea plantations, lively village markets and lush green countryside of western Uganda.
Kibale Forest National Park has a varied ecosystem known for its high number of primates in Africa. The highlight of this tour is primarily watching primates like the rare red colobus and the black and white colobus monkeys not forgetting the chimps. Located in the evergreen hills of the Great Crater Lakes region is the Papaya Lake Lodge with a series of luxurious cottages dotted along the slopes of an extinct volcano.

Day 3:  Kibale Forest

Today we embark after breakfast to the Kibale forest for chimpanzee tracking. Chimps share 98% of the human DNA and are believed to be the closest living relatives. Whilst they can be found elsewhere, they are most easily sighted in Uganda due to the high concentration of the species here.
On arrival at the forest, you’ll follow an experienced guide into the forest to observe these fascinating creatures at a close range, grooming, playing and foraging as per their daily routine. Afternoon at leisure enjoying the lodge facilities and the beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes.

Day 4: Kibale - Queen Elizabeth National Park 

Morning drive to the scenic and most visited Queen Elizabeth National Park. The habitat is varied savannah plains, bushland, wetlands and a forest beneath the Rwenzori mountain range. Game drive along the Kazinga Channel which flows through the park and attracts a large number of animals and birdlife including a large concentration of hippos.

Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Breakfast at the lodge then embarks on an off-road Lion Tracking trip in research jeeps fitted with tracking devices. The data collected by these researchers help in the conservation program in the lives and habits of these predators. Later drive to the Kazinga Channel for a private boat safari while viewing wildlife on the edges of the channel, this being today's highlight.

Alternatively, at an extra cost especially for the more adventurous, you can engage in a hike to the Kyambura Gorge known as “the Valley of Apes”.  While enjoying the views of this impressive landscape, the gorge is home to several primate species including chimps, the red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus, baboons, vervet monkeys and an array of birdlife.

Day 6: Kibale - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After breakfast, this morning you will depart on a Coffee Tour to experience the transformation of coffee beans into delicious Ugandan coffee while sampling at the same time. An opportunity to buy some coffee to take home will be of much support to the local community. Continue to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the home of the Mountain Gorillas of Uganda.

This afternoon you will visit the local communities living on the outskirts of the forest on an educational tour of their day-to-day activities and learn how to weave baskets, sew with traditional fabrics or cook a delicious Ugandan meal.

Day 7: Bwindi Forest

Depart the lodge with packed lunch and a ranger on an exciting and yet challenging journey along forested (often muddy and slippery) slopes, thick vegetation and bamboo forests before you reach the gorilla territory. Half of the world’s population of gorillas live under the mist-covered canopies of Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforest.
On the way, the ranger will point out gorilla activity signs like dung, nests or chewed bamboo shoots. Once spotted you have about an hour to quietly observe and enjoy these fascinating primates.

Day 8: Bwindi-Entebbe- Nairobi

Early morning breakfast then drive to the local Kihihi airstrip for your 0825hrs domestic flight to Entebbe. In the afternoon connect flight to Nairobi, Kenya.

Day 9-11: Nairobi- Masai Mara National Reserve

Depart after breakfast via the Great Rift Valley stopping for scenic view and photography, then proceed to Masai Mara National Reserve arriving in time for lunch.  Afternoon game drive returning to camp by sunset.

The Masai Mara National Reserve offers 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers. Wherever you go wildlife is abundant such as lion, leopard, cheetah, Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos.

The main attraction being the annual wildebeest migration that takes place in July and August when more than a million of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.

Day 2 - is spent on a full day game viewing drive with packed lunch and back to the camp in the evening.
Day 3 - is spent with morning and afternoon game drives. Optional hot-air balloon safari and a visit to the local Maasai village.

Masai Mara – Nairobi

Enjoy breakfast at the camp then depart to Nairobi arriving in time for lunch at the Utamaduni restaurant. Afternoon embark on an ‘Out of Africa’ tour, visiting the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum.  Late evening transfer to the airport for your outbound flight.
