Naivasha

Lake Naivasha a fresh and the highest of the rift valley lakes in Kenya is one of Africa’s most renowned lakes. It has been home to some of the well-known naturalists, conversationalists, and filmmakers and also host to one of Kenya’s largest horticultural farms. Apart from streams, the lake is fed by the perennial Malewa and Gilgil rivers and though there is no visible outlet it is assumed to have an underground outflow.

There is a large concentration of hippos and about 400 different species of bird making it a birders paradise. Within the surrounding acacia forests, you’d find bird including the Hoopoe, Woodpeckers, Rollers, Shrikes, Hawks, cuckoos and much more. On the lakeside are lodges and campsites providing an ideal opportunity to see large pods of Hippo lying half-submerged in the lake and also other wild animals like, giraffes, buffaloes and zebras, just but a few of the animal species that thrive here.

Attractions and activities here include a visit to Hell’s Gate National park, the only wildlife park that you can cycle, and a visit to the gorge. The Elsmere Conservation Centre is worthwhile visit as this was home to Joy Adamson of the fame ‘Born Free’. Boat rides can be organized with a visit to Crescent Island where you can walk among wild animals, this is too a great tour.
