-Essential Tips for First-Time Travelers
Giving Back
African holds a lot of animals now considered endangered species. Let your tour operator know so they can give options for best ways or Sign you up for a conservation safari which is one of the best ways you can directly give back to Africa’s wildlife. If you’re looking for other ways to contribute that will last long after you’ve returned home, donating to worthwhile wildlife charities.
You are also encouraged to give back to communities and staff as a way to thank them for their assistance and hospitality. Unemployment is still very much high across Africa and every amount will help towards building a more prosperous and thriving African community!
Staying Safe & Healthy
Since most accommodations are located in wildlife sanctuaries, they are considered generally safe as long as you follow the safari do’s and don’ts from your guide. Stay hydrated drinking only bottled water and to use insect repellant often. Carry a pack prescription and medications that you may need such as malaria medication, aspirin, ibuprofen and a small first aid kit.
What to Prepare
Visas are required for entry into the east African countries, so you can check for the requirements on sites like VisaHQ.com. To ensure that you have ample time to get the visa processed, it is advisable to apply at least 60 days before your travel date.
Vaccines such as yellow fever are needed before you travel. Others include hepatitis A & B and typhoid and covid-19. If you need more information on vaccines that are destination-specific, the website of the Centers for Disease Control is highly recommended.
Insurance is recommended as most tour operators may require you to purchase travel insurance for your own protection, even if your tour operator doesn’t require you to do so.
What to Pack
Safari clothing should be loose and comfortable, as Africa is known to be sunny so be sure to pack sunscreen (SPF 15 and above, polarized sunglasses, hat, preferably one that has a cord so it won’t get easily blown away. Also, you need to bring a windbreaker and long pants as mornings and evenings can be chilly. For shoes, if you are taking a walking trip, be sure to bring heavy hiking boots. However, if you are going on a guided 4WD tour, open shoes or sneakers would be okay. Not forgetting a binocular, digital SLR camera, digital memory cards, and extra batteries or a power pack so you can make sure you’d be able to capture all the highlights experienced.
How to Get Around
Safaris are operated in 4WD vehicles (jeeps/mini-vans) and if you are a first-time traveler, you should opt for guided safaris where professional safari guides will ensure you get to the best spots to observing the wildlife or panoramic views.
Where to Stay
There is a vast choice of different forms of accommodations depending on your budget. From the luxury five-star accommodations in resort hotels or outdoor luxury camps to the pocket-friendly yet comfortable lodges and camps.
When to Go
When it comes to safaris, the best time to travel depends very much on the destination(s) you have chosen. Generally, the best time to travel would be during the dry season as water is scarce and the animals would usually gather around the few water-holes. The roads are also easier to drive opposed to the wet season when its tricky to navigate most parts.
but If you’re expecting to witness the annual wildlife migration, then be sure to also to note the time of the year this event is taking place.
What to See
The ‘Big Five’ animals (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino) are seen on safaris and are popular among first-time safari visitors, although it’s worth noting that many of the other animal species are unique only to certain regions.
Where to Go
Kenya is known for offering a unique set of beach, wildlife, nature, and cultural tours, and has its highlights depending on the season.
Choosing Your Safari
It is advisable to research on types of safari vacations as there are a lot of options that are on offer. prioritize the list to the ‘must haves’, bearing in mind: –
Preferred accommodation
The budget
Mode of transportation
Activities during the safari
Is this a safari for certain species of animals, or for getting involved in conservation efforts or a to see the annual wildebeest migration?

An Exciting Adventure in the African Bush
Having travelled with Peter, my guide, on many occasions, I knew I was in for a fabulous safari and this adventure lived up to all expectations. I left London on a dreary, February day and was met bright and early at the airport in Nairobi
by my smiling host, ready to guide me on a tailor-made itinerary to some of the most quintessential National Parks and game reserves in Kenya. The first week went ahead as planned, staying in much-loved camps and lodges in the
Tsavos and Amboseli where we were treated royally with traditional warmth and Kenyan hospitality. We saw lions feasting on their kill, large numbers of elephants coloured red with the Tsavo dust or black from the swamp at Amboseli, leopards patrolling their territories, a sea of pink flamingos under the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, visited the elephant I sponsor at the SWT reintegration unit and watched elephants and a leopard at a floodlit waterhole overlooked from the dining area as we enjoyed a delicious dinner in the luxuryof our beautiful lodge. Although we had originally planned to visit the Maasai Mara, the day I flew to Kenya many parts of the Mara suffered severe flooding and due to his wide experience as a guide and his consideration for my safety,
Peter was able to rearrange our safari at very short notice and we enjoyed the nature and scenery at Samburu, Sweetwaters and Naivasha instead. The amazing wildlife sightings continued with many highlights including
following a pride of lions along a track where we were the only vehicle observing this majestic family, a close encounter with the last two remaining Northern White Rhinos and hippos and an abundance of waterbirds seen whilst on a relaxing boat ride. Our final, stunning sunset was spent with a pride of eleven lions as they climbed trees and made their way along the dam and through the golden grass. Peter’s expertise, enthusiasm and ability to always
find the prime position at each sighting, combined with his understanding and prediction of animal behaviour, enabled us to make the most of every precious moment of wonderful safari. Asante sana Peter.
The wildlife was plentiful and stunning, so much local knowledge in this small company.
We have used this company many times, each time the personal’ service was fantastic. We had game drives and added experiences by visiting local community projects that gave us fabulous insights into how people live. We are so pleased we found Cherokee Tours and we highly recommend them.
We were lucky enough to visit Kenya on a safari tour in 2011. Our visit comprised Ambosili, Lake Nakuru and Masai mara. On arrival, we were picked up by Peter Mutsiya from the airport.
The trip was fabulous and the accommodations arranged by Peter was excellent. His knowledge of wildlife is second to none and we learned so much new information. The schedule was flexible and Peter was always happy to
accommodate our requests.I would definitely recommend a trip to Kenya and with Peter for anyone who appreciates visiting game parks and to have a good understanding of wildlife. Thanks, Peter and hopefully we will be able to see you again soon.
