Day 2 & 3: Masai Mara Game Reserve

The next two full days are spent game viewing with morning and afternoon game drives in search of Africa's Big Five and other wildlife inhabiting this vast reserve. On clear days, the Masai Mara offers fantastic orange-tinged sunsets, well-worth day ender. The Masai Mara Game Reserve offers 1510km² of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers, with a mass of amazing wildlife.

The wildlife includes the Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topi, impala, hartebeest, wildebeest elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos all found in great numbers. It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal or surveying the wild plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but reasonably common.

The ultimate action here is, without doubt, the annual wildebeest exodus, the Great Migration, which takes place in July and August when millions of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.

A hot-air balloon trip is a must if you want to see these beasts and the entirety of the reserve from a breath-taking aerial viewThe Masai Mara balloon trips can be arranged in advance at extra cost.
